This classic dish combines tender cabbage leaves with a flavorful filling, all simmered in a rich tomato sauce.
Perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special gathering, these cabbage rolls are sure to become a favorite in your recipe collection.
Recipe (Makes 6 servings):
  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then carefully remove the outer leaves. Continue this process until you have about 12 large leaves. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture onto each cabbage leaf. Roll the leaf, tucking in the sides, to form a neat roll.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, lemon juice, and beef broth.
  5. Place the cabbage rolls in a large pot or Dutch oven. Pour the tomato mixture over the rolls.
  6. Cover and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
  7. Serve the cabbage rolls with a ladle of the tomato sauce and a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley.
