Whether you want to impress dinner guests or simply indulge in a fancy dessert, this dessert is sure to satisfy your cravings.

Follow my simple recipe below to create a dessert that is as beautiful as it is delicious.

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 cup of fresh black cherries, pitted and halved
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: Whipped cream for serving
  1. Prepare the Custard:
    • In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth.
    • Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from scrambling.
    • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Prepare the Pastry:
    • Unroll the puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Cut into 8 equal squares.
    • Place the pastry squares onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.
  4. Assemble the Pastries:
    • Once the custard is chilled, spoon an equal amount of custard into the center of each pastry square.
    • Top the custard with a few black cherry halves.
  5. Bake the Pastries:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Allow the pastries to cool slightly on a wire rack.
    • Dust with powdered sugar just before serving.
    • If desired, serve with a dollop of whipped cream on the side.
Enjoy your homemade Black Cherry and Custard Filled Pastries with a cup of coffee or tea for a truly delightful dessert experience.
